Understanding Teens:
Online information sessions developed for parents/carers of secondary school aged children to support their understanding around adolescent development & behaviour.
These sessions will help you become more confident in understanding and supporting your teenager’s social/emotional development and helping them to thrive
What is it?
Understanding Teens consist primarily of 6 online information sessions for parents/carers of secondary aged children. The sessions cover a variety of topics including; understanding adolescent development, strengthening the parent-teen relationship, emotion regulation, communication strategies and supporting your teen’s emotional wellbeing. The sessions provide parents/carers with evidence-based strategies, and information, to support their teen to thrive.
If you are unable to attend all 6 sessions, you can sign up to individual sessions. However, if you are able to, we do recommend attending all 6. Information on what will be covered in each session can be found below.
We also offer an extra 7th session as part of Understanding Teens which covers understanding neurodivergence.

The Workbook
You will be sent a free workbook with information that goes alongside the sessions. This includes space for you to write down any notes/ strategies that we discuss. The workbook is for you to keep, and you do not have to share what you write in it with the group.
Course Content
Session 1 – Understanding adolescent development
The first session focuses on the changes that are happening within the teenage brain and how these contribute to changes in behaviour.
Session 2 – Strengthening the parent and teen relationship
This session explores the role of attachment, emotion regulation and common difficulties within the parent-teen relationship. This session provides parents with helpful ways to protect your relationship with your young person.
Session 3 – Effective communication
Teenagers can be hard to communicate with. This session provides parents with an understanding of the change in teenage communication styles, and helpful ways to communicate with your teen.
Session 4 – Setting boundaries and expectations
This session focuses on strategies that can help you and your young people manage common challenges in a more effective way. This session focuses on relationship-based positive parenting approaches that not only help to improve behaviour but importantly promote your young person’s confidence and self-esteem.
Session 5 – Supporting teens mental health
This session focuses on recognizing the signs of common mental health difficulties, understanding when and how to seek professional support and promoting mental wellness in the family.
Session 6 – Encouraging healthy peer relationships and social media use
From risk taking behaviour to social anxiety, the teenage years can be very challenging to navigate. This session breaks down common challenges teenagers face, and provides parents with strategies to help build their teenager’s skills in managing difficult situations.
Session 7 – Understanding neurodivergence
Neurodivergent teenagers often have additional challenges to navigate as they develop into young adulthood. This session supports parents to think about some of these challenges and offers practical suggestions about what parents can do to support their neurodivergent teen to thrive. (No diagnosis is required to attend this session).
