How to Write Social Stories Workshop for Parents/Carers

What is it?

This ‘one off’, half day session is an informal face to face workshop for parents and carers about how to write Social Stories for children and young people with a Learning Disability and/or Autism. Social Stories are a visual strategy. They provide a short description of an event, change or sequence, including what to expect in that situation and why.

What does this session involve?

  • Why we use social stories

  • Key rules to follow when writing social stories

  • Examples of social stories

  • How to write a social story for your child

How will this help me?

A social story may help you support your child to understand perspectives, develop social awareness and independent living skills. These can also help to reduce anxiety in certain situations and prepare your child for new experiences. This course is suitable for parents and carers of children who have some understanding of simple spoken phrases and pictures.

Course Content

The social stories workshop will explain what a social story is and when to use a social story.  This will include the key rules to follow when writing a social story and some examples of stories used in practice will be shared.  There will then be an opportunity to practice writing a social story for your child in a supportive environment.  There will be an opportunity to share experiences and problem solve with other parents and carers. You can attend with another parent or carer to consider your child’s needs together.
