Psychology Enhanced Engagement Team
(Formerly known as Guided Self-Help Service)

What is it?

The Psychology Enhanced Engagement Team (PEET), formerly known as the Guided Self-Help Service (GSHS), provides a range of brief interventions for people with psychological difficulties, such as low mood, anxiety, panic, worry, sleep difficulties or stress.

The service is provided face-to-face or remotely (via NearMe videocall or telephone).

What does it involve?

You would work together, with the support of NHS trained Professionals, to learn better ways to manage your current difficulties.

PEET does not provide counselling.  The focus is on how your issues affect your life now and what may keep them going. During intervention, we do not focus on working through past trauma.

Services provided

We offer a range of individual interventions and courses within PEET. You may be considered for groups within other parts of the psychology service.

We have two types of PEET professionals who may be able to help you:

  • PEET Assistant Psychologists deliver brief interventions that focus on using a guided self-help approach. Usually you would meet with the PEET Assistant Psychologist for up to 4 sessions.
  • Psychological Interventions Assistant deliver CBT informed enhanced psychological interventions. Usually you would meet with the Psychological Interventions Assistant for 6-8 sessions.

The service is provided face-to-face or remotely, via NearMe videocall or telephone (although the initial assessment will be via telephone).

What does it involve?

At the first intervention appointment, your PEET Professional will aim to help you develop a better understanding of the problems you are experiencing, and a plan will be made for a brief intervention. This could include time-limited behavioural activation for depression, graded exposure for anxiety, identifying and challenging unhelpful thoughts, problem solving or panic management. We can also offer support using other online resources, including modules available on Access Therapies like CCI. CCI is a website that provides a range of self help resources, such as workbooks and modules, for a range of mental health problems. We may also be able to offer support accessing other resources and services in the community.

You would work through material specific to your difficulties, with support from one of our PEET Professionals. You may be given tasks to complete to help you to make progress, such as reading information to increase understanding of your difficulties, completing a mood diary, keeping a thought record, or recording or changing patterns of behaviour or communication. You might also be directed to other people or organisations that may be able to help you.

Most of the techniques used within PEET are based on cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), which focuses on the relationship between thoughts (cognitions), behaviours and feelings. CBT has been proven to be effective in overcoming low mood and anxiety, as well as other psychological problems.

How will this help me?

  • You will develop an increased understanding of the difficulties you are experiencing.
  • If we are the appropriate service to meet your needs, we will agree shared goals and a plan for intervention. We will then work together to help you to develop ways to manage your difficulties and improve your wellbeing.
  • We may also signpost to another service, who may also be able to help with difficulties you are experiencing. If appropriate, we may be able to support you in accessing this service.

Is the Psychology Enhanced Engagement Team right for me?

If we feel that PEET may appropriate for you, we will offer an initial telephone assessment appointment. During this call we will focus on developing an understanding of your current difficulties. If we are able to help, we will consider what part of our service may be most helpful for you, including our courses.
